I have this friend. He goes by the name of Cassiodorus around these parts. Smart dude. He's been bugging me to go to a Bernie Sanders event, so I figured WTF? and went.
Last night. Morehouse College, Atlanta. It was awesome.
Here I am heading out, all properly attired courtesy of our friend and brother, eeff.
Of course there were a lot of black people there. It was Morehouse. I don't know what it says about Bernie's overall African American support, I just know it fills my heart with joy to see black Bernie Sanders supporters.
The Omega Phi Psi fraternity gave a live-wire performance that reminded me of the Maori Haka.
This little girl stole my heart. She pumped that sign like her future depended on it (and it does).
I want to take this opportunity to say to the African American community with all the respect that has been wrongly deferred, delayed, withheld or denied for hundreds of years: we need you.
You have the power to swing this election and give America the face-lift, the heart-lift, the soul-lift it so badly needs. We need your support. We ask for it with hearts filled with love. We do not feel that you owe it to us.
I stood in line for three hours. Tip: pee before you get in line. And maybe come early but not too early.
Being early, I got to watch the crowd build. The excitement was palpable.
There were three distinguished black gentlemen in line right ahead of me, quite possibly professors. Grey hairs. A couple of young black activists recruiting for phone-bankers and canvassers paused to speak with them. One of the elders said that he might not agree with everything Bernie says, but that he is saying important things. One of the young men said, “He says a lot of radical things, but it's time for radical action.” There was immediate unanimous consent.
Once we got into the arena, the sound wasn't the best, the acoustics or the electronics or something seemed off. I couldn't hear the speakers very well. I'm still not sure who some of them were. Maybe it was just an acid flashback. But even without hearing the words clearly, the feeling was intense, the emotion was profound. It wasn't a 'yay team' vibe. It was more 'glory hallelujah,' more like a shared epiphany, a single current of emotion coursing through each of us, liberating and lifting us. America rising is a beautiful thing.
State Representative Justin T. Bamberg of South CarolinaState Representative Justin T. Bamberg of South Carolina and the lawyer for the family of Walter L. Scott, who was fatally shot by police in South Carolina was there to speak up for Bernie.
Killer Mike killed it as usualNina Turner nearly berned down the house with her chant, “We ain't nobody's damned firewall!”
The crowd went wild.

As the ‘single-issue candidate’ ticked off his concerns and priorities, the crowd went ballistic.

Bernie's not a prophet, a saint or a messiah. He's not Jesus for crying out loud. What he is, is a modern day secular miracle for the American people. A miracle of timing, perseverance, clarity and good judgment.
Bernie's where he's always been We are just now discovering that's exactly where we need him to be.
Please do all you can to help make Bernie Sanders our next president.
Thank you for your time and attention.
